The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Protocol

This website serves as a way for professionals to download copies of the original (Standard) and later improved (Revised) versions of the NICHD Investigative Interview Protocol. The Protocol takes advantage of many researchers' efforts to understand children's developing capacities and strengths, building on those to maximize the quality and amount of information they can provide about experienced events. Research shows that interviewers trained to use the Protocol elicit more useful information from suspected victims of abuse, both physical and sexual, than interviewers using other approaches. It is important to remember, however, that effective use of the Protocol requires considerable and extensive training. Interviewers who simply try to use the Protocol without that training are seldom as effective as they might be.

The translations provided on this website have been made by researchers and professionals familiar with the languages in question. We are very grateful to them all for their generosity and careful work. Most of them checked their efforts by having another native speaker 'back translate' to English to ensure that the process was accurate.
